At Sustainable Lighting we specialise in energy efficient lighting. Our extensive range includes: Energy Saving Lighting options; Eco-Friendly Lighting alternatives; Compact Fluorescent Lamps from the Megaman range; Cold Cathode Lights; Light Fittings; LED Lights; Bud Lights; High Efficiency Downlights; Low Voltage Lighting; Solar Lights and Halogen Lights.
Household Lighting energy use in Australia is increasing due to the construction of larger homes and the installation of more light fittings per home. Most homes could probably reduce the amount of energy they use for lighting by 50 percent or more.
INCANDESCENT LAMPS
Incandescent lamps or bulbs are the most commonly used type of lighting. They are inexpensive to buy but their running costs are high. Standard incandescent bulbs only last about a thousand hours and must be regularly replaced. Incandescent lamps are most suitable for areas where lighting is used infrequently and for short periods, such as laundries and toilets. Compact Fluorescent Lampsoffer an excellent alternative to incandescent lamps.
FLUORESCENT LAMPS
Fluorescent Lampsare the most energy efficient form of lighting for households. These lamps are available as the conventional tubes and Compact Fluorescent Lamps. They work by causing a phosphor in the inside of a glass tube to glow. Different types of phosphor give different colours. Although more expensive to buy, they are cheaper to run and can last over 10,000 hours. With careful design they can replace incandescent and halogen lamps in most situations.
ALTERNATIVES TO HALOGEN LAMPS
Halogen Downlights have become very popular over recent years. Most lighting systems use low voltage lamps and a transformer which uses around 10 Watts. This means that if 6 downlights are used to light a room the lights will consume 360 Watts. This is high energy consumption, especially when you consider a room such as this could be lit with two 18 Watt Compact Fluorescents. However many people have existing downlights or prefer downlights for their appearance. If this is the case there are still ways to save energy.
HIGH EFFICIENCY AND LOW WATTAGE HALOGEN LAMPS
There are now a range of High Efficiency Low Voltage Halogen Lamps. These lamps use innovative lamp and reflector technology to improve efficiency. As a result a 35 Watt lamp can produce as much light output as a 50 Watt lamp. Lamp life is also extended to 4,000 hours. Another option is to fit 20 Watt lamps where the intensity of the 50 (or 35) Watt lamp is not required.
MICRO FLUOROS
Another alternative is to fit Micro Fluorescent Lamps. These lamps use 7or 9 Wattfittings and give equivalent light outputs of around 30 and 40 Watts respectively. They also have a lamp life of approximately 15,000 hours (5 times that of a 12 Volt Halogen Lamp). These lamps have no transformer and can be fitted to standard 240 Volt Halogen Fittings. This means that existing low voltage fittings would have to be replaced with 240 Volt Halogen Fittings, (cost around $15.00). We stock the energy saving Megaman brand.
LED’s
LED’s or Light Emitting Diodes are semiconductor devices which emit light. They can potentially have a very long life (100,000 hours), offer reasonably high efficiences (around 20 lumens per watt) and are compact and tough. A range of LED Halogen replacements are available. The most powerful at this stage use 3 Watt LED. They are suitable for specialist applications such as task lighting. They are best used in locations where the item being lit is less than 1 metre from the LED.
SOLAR BUD LIGHTING
Recent technological advances have made it possible to use Solar Powered LED (Light Emitting Diodes) lights for exterior decorative lighting. The result is much lower power consumption, longer life and when powered with solar panels, zero green house gas emissions. The use of solar power also means total flexibility in locating the lights, as no 240-Volt power is required.
Solar Bud Lighting (Solar Fairy Lights/Solar Christmas Lights) can add a magical sparkle to trees and buildings in public places. However of all the forms of public lighting it is by far the most energy inefficient. Those little glowing bulbs are designed for long life rather than efficiency. They are very wasteful, producing much more heat than light. In fact, conventional bud lighting produces 2 or 3 lumens per watt compared to about 15 lumens per watt for standard incandescent lamps.
Recent technological developments ahv emade it possible to use LED’s (Light Emitting Diodes) for this form of public lighting with dramatic energy savings. LED’s are actually very well suited to this kind of application. They are an excellent high intensity point source and have potentially very long life (over 50,000 hours).
Advantages
Uses less energy. Can be as low as 5% of conventional bud lighting.
No greenhouse ga emissions when run by solar power.
Light can go anywhere. No 240 Volt power is required, so the light can go in the middle of parks, on buildings, anywhere.
These LED lightscan still be used where 240 Volt power is available, but have the major advantages of dramtically improved energy savings and long life. Last longer. LED lights can last from 50,000 to 100,000 hours. The white LED lights create clean attractive lights similar to starlight. Flexibility, the lights can be used on trees, to profile buildings or provide lighting effects with flashing, pulsing or fading lights of any colour.
WHAT IT COSTS
Sustainable Lighting supplies a range of systems from small simple domestic sets for under $60, to large tree lighting systems costing thousands of dollars. Information on a range of kits follows.
